The Jakarta Information Commission (KI) Head Harry Ara Hutabrat wants to strengthen cooperation with the mass media, which aims to campaign for public information to all levels of society.

"I say that because they are an instrument of the KIP Law and are in sync with the Press Freedom Law," he said, Monday (1/18).

He assessed they were important actors in grounding public information disclosure (KIP) as they often interacted with the public and institution.

The webinar with the theme "Mass Media Synergy to Become a More Transparent Jakarta Bridge" was attended by 80 participants from elements of the mass media, community organizations, collage students, etc.

It was the third time that this activity was held after the inauguration of the KI member period 2020-2024. Much acceleration had been made through educational activities apart from hearings of public bodies and mass media as strategic partners.

"We hope to build a positive image of an independent, strong and professional institution. Through this webinar, the public may understand the role and function of the Information Commission," he explained.

Speaker and KI Commissioner for the 2016-2020 period Nani Nurani Muksin added that the mass media should make KIP a synergy bridge to open wider access to information.

She explained the KIP had built at least four synergies with the mass media, namely with the public, public agencies, Jakarta KI and other non-structural institutions.

"Public information disclosure is service-oriented and accelerates good governance, especially Jakarta as a barometer of national policy. KIP is as a guardian of information disclosure must be closely associated with the mass media as a "take and give"," she uttered.

While it was also attended by the Tempo Magazine Chief Editor as a speaker in the webinar revealed that public information disclosure was closely related to data and information.

Investigative journalism, he stated, required KIP to unearth hidden information. Competent sources would determine quality news information, news that was true, accurate and accountable.

"It can determine the coverage, either in print or electronic media," he said.
